an introduction to some of dj events and websites of my this is getting a bit embarassing, running into you, yet again. on the left nav bar, i have listed a couple of special people that make living in dc worthwhile. first, my favorite overall dj night in the city: we fought the big one. dj's five year plan and, er, i forget his dj name, but rick taylor, play the most engrossing dj set in the city. better than anything i could play, i'll tell ya. i sit there, with a notebook, and either lean back, reflecting on how good a song that is and when i first heard it, or scribbling furiously so i can go rush out and buy it. they are fighting the big one, against mediocrity and same-iness and the forces of evil and mies. keep fighting, boys! la lutte continue in december, friday the second or first. i forget. next, my favorite secret night in the city - dj stereo faith and ikon-x7 (a.k.a. steve and jim)'s audio electric weekly (sundays) night at the blue room (yes, my old haunt!). and not just because they rock - also because they are the best two current indie djs around (brandon and rick have the past locked up, jim and steve have the present). also because they're wonderful people spinning amazing new music in an incredible space with a fabulous bartender. let's see...what else...ah, yes! liberation, the brainchild of an evil genius, bill spieler, hosted at his entirely fantastic club, dc9. it's at 9th an u, it's right around the corner from velvet lounge, the 930 club and ben's chili bowl, and the djs are uniformly fantastic. i can say that because it's usually bill, matt, or me. awesoma powa! next, iPod Jukebox, the brainchild of Fritz Hahn and Kathryn Wildt, copied by many, equalled by none. the next one is in december, i believe, at Cafe St-Ex. now, a defunct night - head on - the superterrific shoegaze night by djs sonic and sarcasto. they don't do it anymore, but might resurrect it at any moment. don't count them out. their musical taste is great. the venue and future dates are still tbd... the superfabulous my favorite dress, starring ace flyer designer and dj the holiday girl and terrific scientist and iPod Jukebox wizard, Kathryn Wildt. i'm not sure when the next one will be. december, i hope. dj lil'e doesn't need any boost from me. she started out as a friendly face at panic (see next listing), and i still remember encouraging her and her wonderful husband to dj out. he's been a successful radio dj forever, and she had more enthusiasm than any dj since, well, since rick taylor. now, three (is it three?) years later, she's the biggest indie dj in town save for mark zemin, and looking to conquer the world. right on, girl. keep it up! ah, which brings me to mousetrap. again, doesn't need my boost. it's massive. mark's still got a meseremic hold on the youth of this city. go, go! and, of course, simon's fabulous brainchild in baltimore, sonar. imagine the best dance night you've ever been to - like audio electric, with a bit of mousetrap, a bit of wftbo and a bit of lil'e. mix, and double the audience. it's that good. then there's panic, brain child of my boy olli and his friend james noble. it lasted forever, it was one of the best nights in the city, ever, and now it comes back sporadically. next: friday, december 1. finally, we have laboratory records, the website of laura burhenn, the most gifted singer/songwriter in dc. it's not a dj night, per se, but she does dj from time to time, and she's smart, drop-dead gorgeous, has great style, writes great songs and can really sing. and her fiance, jeff, is, well, they're the prettiest couple in dc - and that includes any lipstick lesbian duo you can hold up to them. and most try to hold themselves up to them, whenever they can. they're hot. (i know, that was incoherent. i'm at work, leave me alone.) do yourself a favor and meet her. or at least buy her bloody record! that's about it for now. as i figure out more folks to highlight, i will, though i don't know what good it will do. i mean, who visits here, right? good bide! |
